Statement of approach to the project
The team proposed to rework the whole of the site within the boundaries, including the steps, landings, retaining walls and upper terrace, as a memorial to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
A new Portland stone plinth would be designed to take the existing statue of King George VI as well as a new bronze statue of Queen Elizabeth created by Philip Jackson, set forward from the existing statue and plinth and placed on the central axis of the upper terrace.
Bronze plaques by Paul Day would be incorporated representing key moments in the lives of the King and Queen, and later, the life of Queen Elizabeth as Queen Mother.
