ABOUT THE SITE
A memorial to King George VI already exists on the north side of The Mall between Marlborough Road and Admiralty Arch (OS grid ref: 180125N 529600E).
Created in 1955, the memorial comprises a statue of the king by William McMillan, dressed in naval uniform, standing on a plinth of Portland stone. Two flights of steps, arranged symmetrically around a central axis, rise from The Mall to the statue, which is located at the edge of Carlton Gardens.
It is envisaged that the existing site will be modified to include a memorial to Queen Elizabeth. The boundaries within which the modifications should take place are as follows:
- edge of pavings on the north side of the Horse Ride at the base of the flight of steps
- grassed areas to the east and west of the above paved area
- walls retaining the ground to the east and west above the steps
- the back edge of the pavement on Carlton Gardens at the top of the steps.
Suggestions to alter street furniture, lighting, surfaces etc. outside the site boundaries may be considered where they are deemed to enhance the setting of the memorials. The steps form a pedestrian route and the improvements to the approach from Carlton Gardens should be considered.
A 3-D CAD measured survey has been prepared and 1:100 drawings have been plotted, including a plan of the site, elevation and section from The Mall to Carlton Gardens.
The site lies within an area managed by the Royal Parks, which will maintain the memorial on completion.
